As a leader, I have often wondered just how a loss such as this would affect me should the unthinkable happen. And now that day is upon me. As SSG Mowris’ Platoon Sergeant, I was constantly amazed at his remarkable ability to foresee hazards and mission obstacles. I relied heavily upon his vast experience and willingness to share his opinions. Every successful unit has that one soldier who has been there, done that, and has the T-shirt and the fruit salad on his greens to prove it. Like it or not, that soldier above all other is established whether by will or virtue, as the subject matter expert; the single source of knowledge and training and the executor of the detailed tasks that need to be done right the first time. Mo was that individual in our unit and he was my crutch, and always my go-to guy when I was being pinched from above. He had an argument for everything, write or wrong, good or bad. And his concerns were always in support of his troops. He fought for them… sometimes in vein.

I developed a friendship with SSG Mowris not because of duty positions, but out of necessity. Not a close interpersonal relationship as some shared with him, and probably from the outside our interaction with each other was probably viewed more as tolerance, than as friends, but he knew and I knew that regardless of our opinions, or our approach to accomplishing missions, we both saw the same black and white in the end and we both wanted to spare as many unnecessary steps as possible to get the desired results. His opinion was important to me and he knew it. And his leadership abilities were solid and needed little oversight. He was trust-worthy and I trusted him as only a friend would.

The loss of this important individual, this expert, this leader, this father and husband, this teacher and soldier, will be severely missed. His dependable skills and his caring approach to dealing with his troops and his family are all qualities in which each of us seek in ourselves. Our unit will never be the same, and I’m not sure that it ever should.

Few soldiers, particularly those in leadership positions, ever achieve the balance between our loyalty to our country, our service, or our fellow soldiers and the loyalty to our family that must be in place to be successful and sane. Mo was no exception. He loved the Army and he loved his troops. And he also worried that his volunteer spirit was eroding his family’s fabric. But he also knew that his family supported him regardless of whether they approved of his decisions to continue his soldiering exploits. With this support, he died not a horrific death, but he took a soldier’s path, and this path often ends too soon for our comfort. SSG James Douglas Mowris died doing exactly what he loved doing and what he himself admitted that God put him on earth to do. He was a soldier, and a damned good one.

So to Mary Michele, Craig, Mackenzie and all of the extended family, as I watch you anguish in the pain of no more ball games, no more hunting trips, no more deployments, and no more Mo, I feel inadequate and helpless. You have my deepest sympathies and all of my prayers. And as I evaluate how this unfortunate event has affected me, I can truly tell you that I have no answer today, except to replace one question with another, and not ask myself how will a loss such as this affect me, but rather, how will a loss such as this not affect me?

In all honor and respect,

SFC Jay D. Rowley

My husband is gone, but will always be in my heart. He died doing what he did best, The Army. Please remember he only wanted you to learn and be careful. I knew he could be hard on some, but that is because he knew you could do anything you wanted to do. I love him with all my heart and i can't help, but be angry. I try to remember that he loved the Army and you all. Please be careful and remember we need you back here. God Bless You. SSG Mo's Wife

Mrs. Mowris, Our thoughts and prayers are with you. After Mo's death, my husband wrote me and he said, "I really looked up to him...He was everything a person could ask for from an NCO and an MP. No one can ever fill his boots." We will all rally behind you as your Army family. Whatever you need, whenever you need it, we will fulfill it.. just as your husband has done for ours.

God Bless You.

Mrs. Mowris, my prayers go out to you and your family in this time of mourning. SSG Mowris was a wonderful man, leader and soldier. During my tenure with the 414th MP Company in Joplin, he always made me feel that I was a part of the team. As a leader he was always taking care of his soldiers!! Mere words can't take away your pain but through prayer God heals all. God bless you and your family!

Mrs. Mowris, though I didn't have the chance to get to know Mo as well as some of the others, I will miss the way he treated all of us. He was hard when he had to be and always able to give you an answer one way or another when you needed it. He treated all of the troops like family, almost like some were his children so to speak. When we were in El Salvador in 99 he razzed me a bit here and there, but also gave me several pointers on what it would take for me to become a good leader.

Each of the leaders in the unit has his or her own unique qualities that make them excel above and beyond expectation. Sometimes it takes an individual to lean on, like Mo, to do so. His careful precision in guiding upcoming leaders and his ability to educate the troops so that they retain what they have been taught will be greatly missed.

Greater love hath no man than this, That a man lay down his life for a friend. John 15:13

Sincerely,

Sgt. Stoney McCleery

I must say that when I found out about Mo's death I was in disbelief. He was one of the more experienced and knowledgeable soldiers in the unit. I remember shaking his hand before they left Joplin and told him to be careful and bring everyone back. Doug was a good friend and a great leader, he will be deeply missed.

Dougie Fresh (as Pat liked to call him) was an amazing soldier, great father and awesome husband. Pat and I are very blessed to have him and Michele in our lives. In the last 12 years we have all been through a lot together. Doug I owe my life with Pat to you as you were there the night we meet and encouraged him to talk to me. You were there the day we married standing proudly beside him. And we have been there for each other during so many other times in our lives.

The Army lost a great soldier, your family lost a great man, and Pat and I lost one of our best friends. Our hearts are broken that you are gone but you will never be forgotten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love Always and Forever,

1SG Pat and Shawni Sticca

Michele, I'm hurt that you lost the love of your life. As one of my greatest friends, I can only say that I pray for you and keep you in my thoughts every day. Doug was a great soldier, a great father and a great husband. Knowing that he's lived a life that many of us can't say we've had the honor of experiencing is a healing thought. Hugs from South Carolina.

I met Mr. Mowris when we began our Institution Familiarization class at the U.S. Medical Center. We went through that training, as well as our basic training in Glynco, Georgia, together. Due to his military involvement, he was highly experienced at most of the tasks put before us, and he was a great support to those of us with minimal experience. While we had a rather large group go to basic training from Springfield, Doug was supportive of many individuals that he met at training as well. It was clear that he was devoted to his wife and family, and that he was looking forward to spending time with them when we got home. After our return to the institution, he made a strong impression on other staff, and did an excellent job with the inmates. He had told me that he hoped to become an SIS Lt. eventually, and there is no doubt in my mind that he could have achieved that goal. He will be sincerely missed.

Doug liked to play ping-pong with the officers at work during his lunch break. He was getting better each day but was a natural with his 'table talk'. He liked to watch Officer Tim Walch play the game and he would laugh loudly at Tim's stupid stunts. He was proud of his family and talked about them often.

I am proud to be part of an organization whose membership includes professional warriors like SSG James Mowris. Although I did not know him personally, it is clear to me after reading his military history, SSG Mowris selfishly committed himself to his God, his country and his family during his life. And because of that, his spirit of sacrifice and commitment will long survive him and will be remembered and honored by by his family, his friends, his country and his fellow warriors. I salute him and his family.

To Michelle, Craig & Kenzie:

Our love and prayers are with you all at the most difficult time you have ever faced in your lives. Since words fail us at times like these, only our Lord can give you the comfort and peace you need that passes all understanding at this time.

Michelle, when you came to work for us in 1996, your winning smile captivated me and our family. I knew we had to know more about that incredible lady behind it. Then when we met Doug, Craig and Kenzie, wow, our whole family fell in love with your family. The few years you were with us were way too short. Even though we never seemed to get to spend "enough" time with all of you, what great fun we had when we were together. And now, those moments are more precious than ever. I don't know who said to "cherish the memories", but those 3 words speak volumes. I'm so glad we have all those memories with you, Craig, Kenzie and now especially with Doug. It is because of men like Doug that our Country has a renewed respect for our Military again. How we loved, admired and respected him for what he was doing. We even forgave him (mostly!) for being a Steelers fan! Anytime we were around him it was evident where his heart was and that was at home with you and the kids.

Thank you for allowing us to try to lend support you all during this time. We all love each of you dearly!!

As many years as I've spent in the Army there are always things that are new or that you've never had to do before. This is one for me. My name is Tim Ferring, I am the Command Sergeant Major of the 535th Military Police Battalion in Raleigh North Carolina, the 805th MP CO is one of our subordinate units. I did not know SSG Mowris nor can I honestly say that I can remember meeting him. I can say however, that when I meet the group of soldiers from the 414th MP CO as they augmented the 805th before they left for Afghanistan, I was impressed by their professionalism and their desire to serve. You could tell they were motivated to take care of the business at hand and that they cared deeply about one another. I can remember saying to the Battalion Commander, "Sir, we got lucky getting such a fine group of soldiers, they will do just fine."

I am sure that SSG Mowris was one that represented that group well. All that have spoke of him have had nothing but glowing remarks. I will be in Joplin Saturday to represent the Battalion during the Memorial Service and at the funeral. I travel with a heavy heart, not looking forward to the duty I have to perform. But I come to honor a professional, a patriot, and a fellow soldier. There is no greater honor than to serve your country during its time of need and to do battle against its enemies. SSG Mowris did both; he is an American hero!

DOUG HADN'T BEEN AT THE MEDICAL CENTER VERY LONG WHEN HE DID A WEEK ROTATION AS INSIDE TRIP OFFICER. DOUG WAS A JOY TO BE AROUND AND VERY PLEASANT TO WORK WITH. FOR THE SHORT TIME THAT I HAD TO WORK WITH HIM I AM VERY HONORED TO HAVE KNOWN HIM.

As grievous as it is to lose brave men and women to the terrible conflict with terrorism, we honor and salute their sacrifice and say a prayer for those they leave behind. Through their sacrifice we get closer to ending this terrible campaign and hopefully ending the bitter struggles of less fortunate people in less fortunate countries. We also help to ensure the safety and well being of future generations and hope that our children will not have to step in harms way in their life time, in order to stay free.

Michele, I have read the thoughts of so many of you family friends and Dougs' military colleagues, and have been affirmed that my friend and pal was highly thought of by so many folks. I knew he was a special guy and so enjoyed the times we spent together at church and the athletic fields. He obviously was very proud of you, Craig and Kenzie, and so looked forward to the upcoming time when he would be able to spend more time with his family. His church family and his teammates had such great respect for his skills and his personality. As Charles said in the newspaper interview, he brought a quiet confidence and a settling influence to the team as I sure he did when leading the soldiers he was responsible for. He went out of his way to visit with my boys especially Scott and Brett who needed his advice and direction for their lives in and out of the military. I would have been proud to have him as one of my sons. He represented all the right kinds of things young people need to see in older role models. We will never know the influence he had on many young people he came into contact with. The country doesn't have enough role models these days, but we certainly lost one who was going to impact a great many people during his days on this earth. I will certainly miss him, as I haven't gone a day without thinking of him many times. I, like so many others are so thankful we got to share a portion of his life. Your church family, his friends and teammates look for the opportunity to help you and your children in the coming years. Please don't pass up the opportunity to let us assist you in any way we can, In that small way I hope to repay the blessings I received from having Doug as my friend.

I would like to send my condolences and sympathy to the family Sergeant Mowris. He was a BOP brother. Even more he was a defender of our freedoms. I thank him and all of the service men and women have have gone and are currently on active duty to keep us free. Even though the media would have us think otherwise, and even though there are those in this country who bad mouth our Commander in Chief and those of you who leave home to give those misguided souls the right to run you down, there are many of us who love you and thank you for your duty time. You are the real heroes of this country and NEVER get the recognition you so well deserve. Thank you and God Bless each one of you. Certainly many good people mourn the loss of this fine soldier. To volunteer for a mission that takes him away form his own unit in order to go with another unit says more than most people will ever understand. Not to mention leaving his loving family behind when he did not have to. My heart goes out to each of his family members as well as his friends. Thank you, SSG James Douglas Mowris for serving this great country of ours and know that your family will be provided for. Rest in peace. (Note from Webmaster: Please understand that the current mission SSG Mowris was deployed on, was not "voluntary" in that sense. He "volunteered" to serve in the United States Army Reserve, to be "ordered" then to go where his country needed him.)

These fine soldiers, my brothers and sisters in arms, serving their country have done so with honor, given their greatest sacrifice, that we may continue to live in freedom and in peace. There is no greater love. My heart breaks for the children of this good man, for my youngest child is also 9 years of age...so this sad news hits even more close to home. Dear children, hold your head high, your Father is a hero, a patriot, and like every soldier I know, so very proud of his children...his family...his sacrifice will never be forgotten. You are in my prayers, may God bless you in this time of sorrow.

No longer can the Reserve Component be belittled with the "weekend warrior" stigma. Regrettably, SSG Mowris and many other reserve component soldiers have made the supreme sacrifice in dispelling that notion and solidifying the fact that service in the Reserve Component is patriotic, dignified, honorable and supremely important in the defense and preservation of this nation. May God bless and comfort his wonderful family in this time of grief and sorrow.

Michelle, Craig and Turd,

We just want you to know that you are in our every thought and prayer. When the boys go to bed at night and say their bedtime prayer, they always add "we love our Daddy up to the Angels," and they asked me if Mo was one of those Angels now that they could pray to so he can watch over everyone and their Daddy! And I said yes. Tim loved MO and he loves you and will always be there for you, as will I and these two trouble brothers that we have (Colton & Tucker). Take care of yourselves and we're here for you always!!!

To Michele, Craig and Kenzie,

We are so sorry for what has happened to Doug. Our hearts hurt for you all. Please remember that Doug loved you all so much. He was a great husband, father, coach to our boys and a wonderful friend. He was an awesome awesome man. We will never forget his great wit and his beautiful smile. He was always willing to help out in any way he could. The football and baseball boys that he coached were truly lucky to have known him and we know that they all are better persons for it. He was greatly admired by all. Bob and I are going to miss him so much. Bob especially will miss him during the ballgames but knows Doug will be there in spirit to watch over Craig at every game that he plays. We pray that you and the kids can somehow find peace and comfort through all of this. We will always be here for you. We love you all so much. Remember that Doug is watching over you now and he is in a better place. We will miss him forever.

We Love You, Tracy, Bob, Casey and Kyle Logsdon

Mrs Mowris,.....Doug and I started at MCFP at the same time. We shared IF/Glynco, and being "Trainees" together, and all through that short time, I respected / admired the inner drive that he had to his job, family, Army obligations, and country. Mo was my "measuring stick", and our friendly competitions will always be remembered. Doug and I would talk and joke of many things, but from what I gathered his family was his inspiration, and that is what I respected the most of him. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family!!!

Bereavement is so personal that few of us, unless we have experienced it ourselves, can comprehend its grief. From reading some of the comments made by so many, I hope it will help lessen your sorrow knowing that so many people share your grief. I did not know Doug personally but the few times I saw him in the hallway, I knew that he would be an excellent staff member in any position he would hold. I can honestly say, I have only been impressed by a very small hand of people that from just seeing them, that I knew that would be an asset to any organization. Doug impressed me from the first time I watched him interact with an inmate.

May the sympathy of those who care make the sorrow of your heart less difficult to bear. I know that your memories will keep Doug close to you. God bless you and your family!

To SSG Mowris' Family:

I can only imagine your grief upon the loss of your husband and father. I recently had a friend of mine die in Iraq: LTC Kim Orlando, Commander, 716th MP Battalion, Fort Campbell, KY. I had known Kimmy, as we affectionately called him, since we met at Fort McClellan in late 1994. He had a wife and two sons and it broke my heart when I heard of his death because I immediately thought of how his death was going to affect his wife and two boys. That same feeling of empathy and remorse goes out to you and your two children. I have a young little girl of my own and I would not want her to go through life without her loving "Daddy". I never met James, but I think I know what kind of man, both father and husband he was to you, and still is in your hearts. It's always said that things happen for a reason, although we never really find out what that reason is until it is our turn to kneel before God and ask him "why?". Be strong in your belief that James is in a great place and you will be with him again. He will stay in your hearts forever and may God bless you and comfort you in times of sorrow. Turn to Him for solace, and know that there are people whom you've never met that are praying for your hearts to heel. God Bless You.

I had the great privilege of getting to know Doug Mowris as a fellow worker, family man, and protector of our country. His deep love of country and his fellow man was evident in all that he did. There could be no finer example our country's commitment to liberty and justice than that exemplified by Doug and the support he received from his family. My prayer is that our country will continue to have strong Christian leadership and that all those who make the ultimate sacrifice feel the appreciation, love, and support of our countrymen.

I never met SSG Mowris but I am aware of what an exemplary individual he must have been. In my 22 years of active and reserve service I never had occasion to doubt the fact that the "cream of the crop" served our country in it's military. My son SGT Paul Maness serves in the 414th and I can tell by his attitude and dedication that he has had exceptional role models as senior NCO's. I want to extend my appreciation to the Mowris family and remind you all that we share your grief and sorrow. Mrs. Mowris, During the month of May every year , during Federal Correctional Workers week, we select one Officer who has fallen in the line of duty, and honor him during our Correctional Workers ceremony. This year, we all agreed it would be appropriate to honor your husband. From the information I have gathered from this website, your husband was an incredible man and we will make every effort to honor him in a way that is deserving of such a person. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and that we are deeply saddened by the loss of "One of our own."

I have three sons - all of them are in the Army. The two oldest are both in Iraq - or will be any day now. The youngest is serving in Korea. After being told of Doug's death, I sent my sons an email telling them what had happened and asking them to be careful. My son, Nate, sent the following message to Michele.

Please tell Michele that as a soldier, I also grieve for her and her children. Tell her that I honor her, her family, and her husband for the tremendous sacrifice they have made for our country and the Army. We all hate hearing the news of a soldier being lost. It's a horrible tragedy, yet one willingly paid by so many. We believe in the mission. We believe that battling the forces of terror in foreign lands keeps the fight from being carried out in our own. I know there is nothing to be said that will make the pain go away or make her kids miss their daddy any less. Maybe she and her family can find some comfort in the fact that his sacrifice allows my family to sleep safely at night without being fearful of tomorrow. I honor her husband, I honor her family, and I cry for them as well.

I had the chance to serve with Sgt. Mo here in Afghanistan. He was a great leader, everyone respected him as a soldier and a friend. He has made a lasting impression on me as I have come to know him on our deployment. He always wanted to be where the action was and always was on the go, always excited about missions. He is greatly missed.

I will remember him always especially the snowball fights we all had out in Ghazni. Some of us would be standing there minding our own business and all of a sudden a huge snowball would come out of no where! He would always try to hide and act as if it wasn't him who did it! It was great. We had some good times in Ghazni. Sgt Mo always would read his book during the day and he would have to keep the tent door kind of open for light. Well people always would come inside the tent and close the door all the way behind them. He would get so frustrated! It was funny cause no matter how many times he had to fix that door someone else would come in and mess it up again. He never really got mad though. He would just look at us with a questioned look and get up and fix the door and go back to reading. I miss him. I pray for his family.

To MO's children: I knew your father very well, and of all the great qualities of your father listed here, there is one particular quality that he possessed that few people ever attain. He put others before himself. Always. Without fail. I think that this is the one resounding quality that truly defined your father. To MO: We miss you, friend. You taught us so many things. You are a man to be emulated; and we will.

Its been two months today since MO passed away. I spent the time trying to find the words to say and also to be able to read what’s written on this page.

Michele, Craig, Mackenzie, and all the rest who knew MO, I can say that to this day I still can’t look at all the great things people have written about him without shedding a tear or remembering things he did or taught us all. So I will write it now while memories are still fresh in my mind.

I remember back when MO came into the unit ‘cause I helped in-process him and got to visit with him while going through all his experience in the Army. From that day on, I didn’t spend time with him without learning something. I can honestly say that serving with him as an enlisted and now having served with him as one of my squad leaders as his PL was an honor. I can say that most of us who served with Mo and knew him would not have been half the soldiers or individuals we are today. He will forever be missed!

A better squad leader, MP, soldier, friend and dad is hard if not impossible to find. Not a day went by here in Afghanistan that he didn’t talk about his children and the sports they play or riding the four wheelers and how much fun he was going to have when he got back, or mentioning all the things him and Michelle were going to do while he was on leave after getting home.

He came to me while we were in Kabul asking for a way to design his “cabin” ‘cause he was bound and determined to build it when he got home. It didn’t take us long to decide that he needed to talk to one of the Engineers working with us there, and for what seemed like weeks all he talked about was how sweet it was going to be. One things is for sure, when Mo made his mind up about something he didn’t back off until he got it accomplished. That also added to his personality in and out of uniform.

If you were to ask any of us who served under him the unanimous answer about who cared most for his people would be Mo. No one could talk bad about or to one of his soldiers without him stepping in and fixing the problem. Most of us have also been on the receiving end of one of his venting or “learning” sessions that he had, but I for one can say that when he spoke harshly he was more times than not right in what he said.

For the remainder of the time I spend in the Army I will remember what he taught me and the words of wisdom he offered, and I know that we didn’t really loose him. He is now in a better place watching over all of us as he did Tim and the guys in Ghazni. Michele if there is ever anything I can help you with or do for you, just get a hold of me and I will be there. I know that even though it was hard on us to loose Mo it isn’t but a fraction of what you are going through. The only positive thing I can say is that thanks to him none of his people were hurt, because as always when Mo was around if something wasn’t 100% safe he kept his people out of harms way. He would never have any of his soldiers do anything he wouldn’t do himself much less give them a chance to get hurt if he could keep the from it.

Mo you are loved by all who knew you and there hasn’t been many days over the past two months that me, Tim, Jesse, Abe, Rick, and a lot of other guys haven’t had to smile because of something you said or did while here. You lived your life ruled by great values and honor; your death will not be forgotten. You and your family will always be in my thoughts.

To Michele, Craig & Kenzie~ I can only imagine the emotions you have experienced during this tragic time. It's is o.k. to cry...but you should not be sad...you should rejoice because you were blessed with such a special person in your lives and some people just dream about having a special person to share special times with. Treasure the memories...talk about Doug...his body may be gone but his spirit lives within each of you! You have a special guardian angel watching over you now...and Doug, if you are listening~you better take care of them...May God bless your family and help you to find hope and joy again.

SSG Mowris,

I miss you but most of all I thank you. Because of you and other soldiers that I was deployed to Afghanistan with, I was able to sleep a little comfortable at night. You guys went out on the battle fields for days to make sure that we as Americans stayed free. No one knows what MP's go through except MP'S. You were special to the 805th MP CO in Afghanistan, but more for 4th platoon. I seen you go to battle for your troops which is what a NCO does. We all miss you so much. Even though I only worked for you on a few occassions, you made a lasting impression on my life because of your love for the soldier. To your family I say keep your head up. Remember that God has controll of our lives, remember that SSG Mowris served his purpose. Think about the lives that he saved, not the life that he gave. Remember God can heal every aching wound in your soul, just trust in him and he will bring you through it all. Trust in God.

Michelle, I think that you still remember me. I served with James in Somalia and then again (12 years later) with him in Ghazni. I had left Ghazni the same day that James went to the PRT. James and I would spend time together when ever we could see one another in Bagram. We would talk about old time at Fort Carson, Somalia as well as talk about you and the kids. We all shared hard times together during our deployments, after deployments and then again during deployments. James is a great man, but he could not do what he loved to do without the love and support that you always gave him. I admired that so much in your marriage. On that tragic day, fellow soldiers from my unit were preparing to return home and they left the air terminal to find me and tell me the news. I wept so much. I have never forgotten James for he was such a big part of my life and the history we made together. Did JD ever tell you about the story of the monkies in the tree of Somalia? I hope to hear from you when your ready and I will share that funny story with you. My prayers to you, your family and to Adam Kinser's family. A friend that I met and lost in Ghazni.

Michele- Has it really been 17 years? Damn we you getting old! I remember all to well the night you met Doug. I knew from that moment that you two were meant to be together. While I do not know why this has happened I know you will carry on in true Michele fashion, with the same bull headed determination and grace that first led me to your friendship in the first place. Though I never met Doug I know his legend. It lives on at USMCFP Springfield, on the streets of Aurora, in prayer. I've seen many a tear come to the eyes of those who knew him. I was raised in the Aurora United Methodist Church, and take comfort knowing what a loving extended family Michele and the children will always have. Today I was talking to a man who served with Doug in the 414th. He spoke of the Houn Dawg support shown at Doug's funeral, of how he'd never seen a city come so close together to remember one of its own. In Aurora we know that we are free only through the service of men like Doug. Thank you, Doug, for your service. Thank you, Michele, for sharing the man you love.

I visited the new Veteran's cemetary in Springfield to say a prayer upon the combat flag that was carried with me overseas. Then it was time to place that flag upon your resting place to give you that prayer and know that somewhere, somehow, you managed to aid in the ability of one of those other fallen soldiers, sailors, or marines in living just a little longer to complete God's plan for them. We all know that you will watch over us as if we were all a part of your family. We ask only for the guidance to gain the ability to continue the missions ahead so that we may protect the family you have helped to create. Your loved ones will always be in our prayers.

As I read the bios, and viewed the pictures, one cannot help but be humbled, by the young men, and women who serve our nation, and those who ultimately give the greatest sacrifice one can. However short their time with us was, we are honored for having known them. God bless them and their families.

To Doug's Family: I could not imagine what it is like to loose someone so special. I know I will never forget Doug. I only had the privalige of working w/ him for a short time (back then I knew him as Crowbar...Gotta love rotomold) but he taught me a lot about how to handle myself and others in a leadership position. He was my foreman at Miracle recreation for a short time till he did his first tour in Afghan. Michelle - I am so sorry for your and your family loss but feel proud that your husband lived his life to ensure the freedom and safety of your children, me, my family and every other U.S. citizen. Men like him are true hero's!!! May God Bless Jeff Martinson & family Monett, MO

Michelle, I have read all these tributes to Doug and I can't help but wish when my time comes that I will be remembered as he is. Doug was a special man. Respected and looked up to by those who knew him. Not only because he served his country but because he made a difference in so many of the lives of the people he came in contact with. I only wish I could have known him better. I remember coaching our kids in little league ball. He was a mentor for them all. As i finish my tour here in Iraq I know the longing to be with the ones that I love, I can only feel so fortunate to be able to see my family again. The stresses and strains that are put on a family during a deployment are hard enough. I cant phantom the losses you and the kids are feeling. My god bless you and yours. Sgt Sam Weeks 1438th En Co. Adam came from a small town, a close knit family and a large group of friends, we all felt it and we still do. I know that I am thankful that someone can be so kind to fight for their beliefs and for our nation...most of all for me, and i don't even know them. I pray for the soldiers every day and night, my husband is one of them as well, know that your family is in my prayers and that God is with you and is holding him. Thank you.

It is on this sad day that I once again must ask of you “Mo” our friend, our brother, watch over our newly lost friends, give them a nice place to rest and keep a watchful eye over them; your strength will help us all.

Two more soldiers who gave their all to protect those they didn’t know; two more of our brothers who gave the ultimate gift to let the rest of us feel safer. SGT Nathan Field and SPC Robert Johnson were outstanding soldier, leaders and friends. I know that you will take them into your stable and take care of their needs.

My wife asked me on New Years if I had any resolutions to share, I told her I didn’t! That wasn’t true, but as usual my resolutions take only days to fall apart, this time 6 days to be exact. Terri, I am sorry to; yet again have to say, I am not bringing everyone home. One thing is for sure though, my last New Years resolution ever, is that I will never again attempt to promise anyone anything that I, myself do not have 100% control over, and my days of making resolutions for New Year has come to an end!

“We give thanks for those who halt their lives to free us all; and more to those who loose their own, to protect people they don’t even know” Me, today 7 January 2006

 God bless.

Today I'm reminded of how much it hurts when one or two of our comrades have been lost. I seem to miss Mo that much more not having him around to help me through this. He was always there for me and anyone else who needed his assistance. But it helps me to strive to be better soldier and man if only to make him proud. I will never forget him or his family who shared him with us.

I sit here in Iraq, on the eve of Mo’s death 2 years ago, wondering again why this had to happen. I know that God has a plan for everyone and everything, but sometimes you can’t help but wonder why. I would hate for someone else to go through it, but sometimes you can’t help but be a bit selfish. Mo was a good friend who would do anything for anyone at anytime, day or night. It didn’t matter if you had known him for years, or you had met him 5 minutes ago, he was there for you. Helping you with something, or giving you direction so that you could finish it yourself, that was the way he was. He was a stubborn man, too. I don’t know how many times that we butted heads on things, but that just made me respect him that much more. Not one to let what was on his mind go unspoken, you couldn’t help but get into a few “discussions” with him. Some heated, some not, you were guaranteed that he was going to let you know how he felt on things. Whether you were friend or foe, subordinate or supervisor, it didn’t matter. I think of Mo often. Sometimes when I have a few idle minutes my mind wanders back to the many times that we shared. I remember going to El Salvador and him and Tim throwing water bottles at the stray dogs running through our camp, or showering under the tin roof of our huts when the nightly rain came in. Or when we were in Cuba and watching him attempt to slide into home plate. Then there was his golfing ability. I have not seen anyone that has hit a worse slice than Mo. He couldn’t aim far enough left. Try as he might, it just wouldn’t go straight for him. Unless he wanted it to slice. Then you could almost guarantee it would. Or the big snowball fight we got into a few days before he died. These things, among many others that are too numerous to mention here, I remember very fondly. However, the thing that I remember most vividly, and the most often, is the last time that I saw him, right after the accident. I was one of the first responders to the site. Our combat lifesavers were already working on a few survivors, and the few of us that arrived after them were looking for more. When I saw Mo lying in that hole, it looked like he was sleeping. There wasn’t a scratch on him, but for some reason, I knew that he wasn’t alive. This is the thing that I remember most. That and the very last time that I would see him as we carried him down the mountain to the helicopter to be taken out. That is the most difficult thing that I have ever had to do in my life, and I don’t wish that on anyone in the world. Michele, Craig & McKenzie, I am so sorry that there wasn’t anything more that I could do. It just happened by chance that it was Doug’s turn to go on the mission that morning; otherwise he would still be with us today. I am also sorry that it took so long for me to write something. I know that he is watching us from above, and that he has taken SGT Field & SPC Johnson under his wing and is teaching them. That’s what Mo is; a teacher. I hope that I can do for others what he has done for me and all of us who knew him. God Bless You and keep you safe.

Mike Abram

Doug, the trials of conflict have sent you two more from your home unit to watch over and guide. Take them under your wings and give them the strength they will need to watch over the loved ones they have left behind.

Form your team as they come to you so that your SRT of angels may guide us during times of struggle and grief as we await the return of our loved ones still overseas. My heart is still heavy on the anniversary of your passing. I still regret not having more of an opportunity to know you better.

My memorial band is about to be retired so that I may replace it with one to honor you and Butch. Wearing it every day sometimes gets strange looks, but you can always identify those who know exactly what it stands for. They are the ones that always ask "did you serve with the soldier on the band?" It puts a small tear in my eye to say yes, then briefly describe you to them.

I stumbled across some of my pictures from El Salvador, first mission with you. It makes one wonder where the time and people go. So many faces from then that are no longer with the unit. Some that are and look so much younger from such a short time ago.

Father of Spec. Adam G. Kinser. It has been over two years since the death of our boys. I just want to say... I don't know what to say. We are connected by a thread of pain and honor and patriotic heroism. I can only now understand the pain and sacrifice of families of the fallen. I thank God for those who fully understand the cost of freedom, it is a high and noble price to pay. God bless America, God bless our troops!! -Paul Kinser

This brave soldier died with our son Sgt. Justin A. Scott. I can not thank you enough for the sacrifice that Army Staff Sergeant James Douglas Mowris had made to this country. My husband was so proud of these men that James name is tatooed on his arm along with the seven other men that died on that day in history of January 29, 2006. That tatoo has the twin towers from 9/11 the eagle that has a tear and look of anger along with Christ in the clouds. If you send me your email at blscott44@peoplepc.com I will send you a picture of that tatoo. May God bless our country and empower our men. With great empathy and gratitude, Wm & Lisa Scott, Jr.

James, I have not forgotten about you. In a way I can't. When my son was born 9 months ago, we chose "James". Yes, we named him after you. I know what kind of man you are and with hopes that my son will grow up the same. I tell him about his name and the brave man he was named after and one day when he is able to understand I know that he will be proud of you as well as many others are. I'll drop you a line from time to time just to say hello. Your friend, George Davila

Michele, I found this memorial tonight as I thought of my days in Afghanistan and remembered a couple of Soldiers that I served with from the 805th MP Co. I was with the 10th MP Co, Fort Drum, NY. I did not know Mo but I do remember meeting him when I arrived in Kabul in August of 2003. I met and shook your husband's hand and had a few conversations with him, mostly military and MP business. I learned from dealing with Mo of his demeanor and committment to his Soldiers and the US Army. I know that he was well respected within his unit, especially by those that he led or followed. When I learned of your husbands death, I just thought of the man, fellow Soldier, fellow NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER that welcomed my team and I, ensuring our safety on the compound while we slept, ate, and prepared for daily missions throughout the capital - Kabul. I had the great pleasure of gaining SGT Williams, Thomas of the 414th MP Co on my team about a month before Mo's death. It was SGT Williams that shared with me his experiences with your husband and described your husband in a way that I felt that I knew him for the years that he (SGT Williams) had. I knew then, that Mo was very well respected and loved. Scanning through the forum, reminded me of what I've learned about your husband 3 years ago. I just wanted to sign this memorial to express my sincere sympathy to you and your family. SFC Jesse J. Alcock

I'm good friends with this mans son, Craig, I recently joined the MP regiment, so recent that I'm still in training right now at Fort Leonardwood, MO, I am going to be stationed with the same company that he was in, I know just by reading half the comments on this page that this soldier is missed greatly amongst the MP regiment and at home, I pray to one day be half the soldier/ father that he was, I heard he did some great things and was an excellent leader, I know that he was the best kind of father, If you know Craig or Kenzie then you would see that through them as well, It's just as easy to see that this man was a great husband, Michelle, you know me, I'm just a teen, not deeply poetic nor the best with words all the time, if I knew of something to say to help ease any of this pain, I would say it in a heart beat, I pray for your families days to come easy with little stress and all of your wishes granted, I love you guys to death and miss you tons. -PV2 Franklin James Larsen

Sometimes we meet people only once, not knowing anything more until things change and to never have met JAMES MOWRIS makes no less difficult to loose a special loved one at any time. I do know of the family from Adamville Pa. because the family lived only a couple hundred feet from my cousin who is related to them. This was in the early "50 Please GOD bless the family always. Doug, I went to visit you on your birthday, and you and Micheles anniversary, it still doesn't seem right that you are gone. Chele and I went out and drove around on your anniversary, I wanted to keep her busy, but we talked about you and Steven and cried. I was wanting to help her, and again she ended up helping me more with problems I have, (isnt that just like her !?). of course you know, thats why you loved her so much. I wish I could make all her hurt go away, but I cant, the only way I can do that is to bring you back to her, and I cant do that, but believe me if I had that power I would!! You two will be together someday, just watch over her, I love her and cant stand for her to hurt. Well, you could do something a little mean to her, I never have had the chance to tell you what she did to me for my 40th birthday, she had signs make up saying "Lordy Lordy Ann Waggoner is 40!!!!" and she put them all over town!!!!! Now, she is leaving the state for her birthday, how mean is that???? I will get her back though, dont worry "shake and Bake" will get revenge!!! I love and miss you Doug. Ann

James, It's been awhile since I've written you, but never have I forgotten you. The fact that You and my Son have the same name makes that impossible. Here in San Antonio there were ceremonies for remembered Vets. I just wanted to let you know that you are not forgotten by my family as well as many others. I lost contact with Michelle about 8 months ago. My Son is now 2 years old and as crazy as I once was. You remember. Well Brother, I will get back to you again. Miss you, G. Davila

Mowris' family, I was writing an essay today on professionalism and thought first of then CPL Doug Mowris of the 984th MP Company, Fort Carson, CO. I googled Doug Mowris. I found this site. I have never forgotten the courage Doug and Michelle displayed following our deployment to Somalia. SSG Mowris was an honorable, professional soldier. I will never forget. B. As a leader in the military or in any position of responsibility, one of the hardest things we must do is write or call the loved ones of a fallen soldier. I had the upmost honor of serving with Mo while deployed in 2003 in Afghanistan during our country's fight against the Global War on terrorism. Most letters home would tell you that he served with honor and distinction, which he did, but I want to focus on his lasting impact he had on all that he encountered. SSG Mo was a leader of soldiers, a friend and teacher to all, but the best thing I remember of Mo was his love and conversations of his family. Mo was a husband and a father first and foremost! He and I would talk during our many missions, talk of family, our wives & our children. He told me of the home that he and Michele were planning to build in Springfield, Mo. James has had a lasting impact on my life. He allowed me to see that life is too short to not focus on the little things as well as the big things! Each of us in our short time on this planet must live our life to the fullest! I can tell you that james Wowris did just that. I found out about Mo's passing while I was deployed in Iraq. He and I served in Kabul, Afghanistan together for 5 months before I transfered to Iraq in late 2003. I was crushed. He was my first friend to pass that I had direct ties to in our war on terror. How we all deal with death is what defines us as people, leaders, husbands, wives, children and parents. It is hard to fathom that he is gone, but James will never be forgotten. I for one am proud to have served with him, am proud that I can call him my friend! To Michele, Craig & Mackenzie, I wish you all the best during this time for your loss of Mo. He will be missed. We all miss you Mo. Sincerely, Keith A. Dotts MAJ, EN U.S. Army

I served under SSG Mo at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan from 2003 to January 29, 2004. At one point he was the team leader for me and a little group of 3 other soldiers on a quick reaction force... in other words we hung out in a staging room and would just B.S. and watch "Hamburger Hill." He has been an inspiration to me for the past 4 years and will continue to be. No other NCO will positively impact soldiers the way he has, and that impact has carried over into the junior enlisted who were under him who are now NCOs themselves. I can't even begin to imagine the Beauty of his life and those he touched outside the Army. My prayers are always with his family. ~SGT Allen; 327th MP BN~

To the Mowris family, I am Sgt. Robert James Jackson. I was with "MO" in 4th platoon when we were in Afghanistan and I am currently back in Afghanistan at the same location. I work in the same facility that which they named the floor after "MO". I know that tomorrow is the 4th anniversary of his passing and I wanted you to know that you all are in my prayers and that tomorrow I am lighting a candle under his photograph and medals that are still hung on the wall in his memory. Be safe and may god bless your family. My e-mail is robert.james.jackson@us.army.mil if you want to contact me or need anything from me.

There is not a day that goes by that the soldier's and families of the 414gh MP Company do not think of Mo and often discuss his funny personality but always about his leadership and love of his comrades. I've had the honor to spend some time with your son in recent weeks and he is a strong, smart, funny, handsome kid. He shakes hands, he looks adults in the eye when he speaks and he represents you in the way you have earned. You should be so very proud of your family and I believe they are able to carry on so well because each and every day, they still carry you in their hearts. Geno's

We talk about him often. Know that you are in our thoughts & prayers, not just today but always. Life gets busy and we may not stay in touch but that does not mean that we don't think of you and your family. Take care Michele & reach out if you need us. Thank you everyone for your kind emails and comments. Doug was truly an exceptional father, husband and soldier. Not a day goes by that i don't think about something funny he said or a memory that we shared. I look at our kids and i see so much of his personality, his sense of humor and stubbornness. I thank God every day for the 16 years he was next to me and for the lifetime of love and memories. Michele

Dear Mrs. Mowris, My name is Beverly Richardson. I dated Doug briefly in 1985 while he was with the 555th MP unit at Ft. Lee, VA. We parted ways when he was sent to Turkey and I moved back to KY. Recently, while going through a box of old things, I came across Doug's high school class ring. I decided to try to look him up so I could return it to him. That is how I came to find this site. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing. I remember him as a happy young man with a big smile and a terrific laugh. I can't begin to imagine how much you miss him. If you would like to have the ring, please feel free to e-mail me. May God bless you and your family. Beverly Richardson Richardson06@alltel.net
